Évora_27 on the agenda of the Education, Youth, Culture and Sport Council of the European Union

This morning, in Brussels, following the invitation of the Ministry of Culture, the Mayor of Évora, Carlos Pinto de Sá, made a presentation on Évora’s nomination as European Capital of Culture in 2027. During the meeting of the Education, Youth, Culture and Sport Council, Carlos Pinto de Sá presented the concept and proposal of Évora_27.

The ministers in charge of education, youth, culture, and sport from the EU Member States gathered in Brussels for two days to discuss a variety of topics, including the social component of a youth-friendly Europe, the protection of human rights during the planning of major international sporting events, and the Freedom of  Media Regulation. After having addressed issues related to Youth and Sport, on Tuesday morning, 16 May, the European body concentrated on culture and audiovisual issues. The presentation on Évora 2027, European Capital of Culture, took place in this context.

During his intervention, Carlos Pinto de Sá stressed: "With 'Vagar', rooted in our identity and with a universalist nature, with our identity project of European Capital of Culture, we wish to be the protagonists of ecological transformation, rebalancing Human Being, Urban and Nature, refocusing art, culture, and beauty; of digital transformation with the inclusion of everyone; of an economy at the service of people, resuming and boosting circular economy; of another way of life for Europe, enhanced with the Alentejo way of life; of participatory democracy to build a Europe of the Peoples, of friendship and cooperation, of Peace." The promotional film "Take Évora!" was shown at the end of the presentation.

In 2027, two cities in the European Union - Évora, in Portugal, and Liepāja, in Latvia, will be European Capital of Culture. Évora 2027 proposes VAGAR - as full awareness that we, as humans, are always in relation with everything around us - as an urgent future response to the challenges facing Humanity. Questioning our dominance position, VAGAR involves coevolution, contention, creation and construction, time and space, memory and collective, resilience and tension and emerges as "another art of existence".

Évora_27 European Capital of Culture, is promoted by the Executive Committee Évora 2027, led by the Municipality of Évora. This Executive Committee is also composed by the Alentejo Regional Directorate for Culture, the University of Évora, the Intermunicipal Community of Central Alentejo, the Alentejo Regional Development Coordination Commission, Tourism of Alentejo - ERT, Eugénio de Almeida Foundation and the Alentejo Regional Agency for Tourism Promotion - ARPTA.
